Since this tpoic is still going..... In my "dark ages" I was
blindly following whatever my Doc said and didn't know much about
breastfeeding. (When I had my first, I only wanted to breastfeed
because as the younger of 2 girls, my sister had done everything
before I did. She tried breastfeeding but gave up after a couple
days. Here at last was something I could "beat" her at! That's what
kept me going at first in spite of little knowledge or support. Now
look where it got me!)
Anyway, back to the subject- When I was told to start solids at 2
weeks with my now 33 year old, my first impression was "How advanced
he must be to be able to take regular food so young"! I did begin
to wonder about the wisdom of it when it looked no different going
in and coming out the other end. Since I faithfully stuck with the
pureed store baby foods (I hadn't found LLL yet) he was nearly a
year before we dared to try anything from the table. The result was
that it took a long time for him to accept anything that wasn't
totally mush! I've heard a couple other moms report the same
experience. It seems starting solids too soon can interfere with
the transition to regular food later.
Winnie Mading IBCLC - definitely older and hopefully wiser
