Please bear with me as I am just starting out as a bf helper. What do you
do with a 13 month old who has suddenly started clamping strongly enough to
cause two tooth marks (from lower teeth) on mom's nipple? This is not
biting, just too strong of a grip and obviously no tongue covering the lower
teeth. I believe the baby is teething first molars and this has been a
problem for about two days. Quite uncomfortable for mom. I am unsure as to
what to advise; "NO" and breaking latch may discourage BF altogether , would
it not? Mom says babe "has never been an enthusiastic eater", is easily
distracted and is afraid to further discourage by reprimanding him. Babe
starts out OK but mom says she starts to notice that the latch seems "too
tight".
How does one begin to change the latch habits of a toddler? I am
unexperienced in working with toddlers (except my own) so any advice would
be very much appreciated.
