Check out the WHO guidelines or review of lit on hypoglycemia (check
archives, mine at work) and the Academy of BF Medicine (posted by Nancy
Wight). Search the archives too for others contribution about their own
institutions.
Lots of things that happen to neonates foster iatrogenic hypoglycemia,
therefore I recommend making sure the powers that be see info about
preventing hypoglycemia, as you said, which would include info on:
- preventing heat loss, so having baby skin to skin with mother (not blanket
to hospital gown, delaying bath etc (moms can do this later)
- early BF (1/2 to 1 hr) as recommended by BFHI
- continuous rooming or bedding in with UNRESTRICTED EFFECTIVE BF and
watching for early feeding cues
- no ROUTINE testing of healthy newborns (testing may be indicated for
certain at risk neonates
Good luck making changes; you've got your work cut out for you!
