Pat,

I thought the problem only occurs when iron-containing foods contact
breast milk. This would mean when they are mixed together in the
digestive tract, or even before administration (such as a bottle of part
breast milk and part formula, or mixing cereal with breast milk ).

The lactoferrin is thereby stimulated to interact with the iron in the
food instead of those bacteria that contain iron. This then effectively
"uses up" the germ-killing effect of that "batch" of lactoferrin while
depriving baby of the iron that would have been supplied from the
breakdown products of the bacteria. I don't think it keeps baby from
absorbing the iron that was in the other food.

I didn't think that iron-containing food or formula ingested alone at
one feeding interfered with breastmilk at another feeding if there is
sufficient time lag for digestion to have completely taken place..

If I am remembering it incorrectly, I hope someone will explain it
better.

Jean
