interesting re weight loss etc - i agree that babies born at home, or who go
home stat, lose very little weight.
Actually, everywhere i have worked in the past 5-8 years has not weighed
babies on the 3rd day, as was standard till then, unless there are specific
indications, like maybe the baby of a diabetic mum, SGA, preterm etc.
I have not noticed any problems with that.
In fact, usually I can tell if a baby has put on weight or not, when i strip
their clothes off - these are babies I have "caught", so I am familiar with
them - their thighs are like mine already! I would usually weigh a baby on
day 5-7, depending on how feeding is going of course, then weekly from
there, unless the mum wants it done more.
In NZ we (midwives) visit for up to 6 weeks.
My own babies, born either at home, or were at home within 2 hours of birth,
put on between 200g and 750g in the first week! they were smallish boys -
3.100kg, so I think it was catch up weight.
I agree that observation of the feeds, and of the babies, is *the* most
important thing - the scales often back up one's gut feeling.
