Thanks to all responders. Yes, the mom is afraid of further nipple trauma.
Her nipples are not all the way healed, though very much better, per her
report. I called her to followup due to mastitis. She says she is resigned
to pump and feed the ebm, though she is preserving the one bf per day
although she would love to bf if she didn't have pain and trauma. Does not
want sns due to nipple pain. Still having pain during the one bf but can
tolerate that.
I have seen damaged nipples heal and then when baby goes back to breast all
is ok. Like many of you said, I can't make her go back to full bf. Having
super duper pumps can be a lifesaver, but sometimes (often I would say) it
permanently ends feeding at the breast. Many times moms ask me "is there any
disadvantage to just feeding the pumped milk?" And I say yes: less in tune
to baby, milk supply issues, less skin contact, oral/facial/airway issues,
possible bacterial contamination. What disadv do you all give?
