I am trying to help a mother with a three week old baby who is using nipple
shields and would like to stop using them. The baby is used to the nipple
shield and refuses the breast without it. She has tried slipping it off
after let-down. She has had limited success with this.. Weight gain of baby
is acceptable according to her doctor (around an ounce per day). The mother
is reluctant to try the "harsher" method of no nipple for Day 1 while feeding
with a dropper, cup,..., then offering the breast for comfort, then
nourishment. The method of cutting away a bit of the nipple shield until its
gone sounds the best, however, this can be done with latex or some other soft
shield. We have only found silicone shields (the kind she is using now).
Does anyone have a source for any nipple shields which aren't silicone? Does
anyone have any advice? Please email me on LACTNET or privately
