Kathy: A few years back, Dr. Jan Riordan and Sue Huml, did a fabulous
session on sore nipple research. Basically, their answer is an unequivical
NO, limiting time at the breast didn't reduce soreness, it just postponed
it. The presentation was session #217 SORE NIPPLES: LOOKING AT AN OLD
PROBLEM A NEW WAY at the LLLI July 1995 conference in Chicago. The list of
references is lengthy, but the ones most relevant to your question are:

Hewet RJ and Ellis, DJ. A Comparison of the effectiveness of two methods of
nipple care. BIRTH 14: 41-45.

Kearney, MH, Cronenwett, LR, and Barett, JA: Breastfeeding problems in the
first week postpartum; Nurs Res 39:90-95, 1990.

deCarvalho, M, Robertson, S. and Klaus, MH: Does the duration and frequency
of early bf affect nipple pain? BIRTH 11:81-84, 1984.

Gaus, B. Breast and nipple pain in early stages of lactation Br. Med J. 2:
830-32.

Ziemer, MM, Pagone, JP and Schupay, J et al. methods to prevent and mangae
nipple pain in bf women. West J Nurs Res 12: 732-44, 1990.

Oh, heck..they're all relevant...I suggest checking in the most recent
edition of Riordan.
