I agree that it's rediculous for most moms to keep such records.
Yes, the first few days until baby has mastered nursing and her
supply is established. I tell moms at that point, "Enjoy your
baby. Watch the baby, not a sheet of paper. One way to keep tabs
on the output without writing everything down is to make a habit of
putting out a pile of 8-10 diapers at the first change of the day.
If they're gone in 24 hours and you've had both wet and dirty,
you're doing fine." Most moms are relieved and comment on how easy
that would be. Of course if there are any concerns about baby's
intake, such as if she is nursing with a shield, then I would
encourage her to keep a little closer eye on the number of diapers.
