I use guidelines from Robyn Noble and Anne Bovey's article about
bottle teats for breastfed babies.(Noble R & Bovey A, 1997,
Therapeutic teat use for babies who breastfeed poorly, Breastfeeding
Review 5(2): 37-42)
They actually do specify a particular brand and style (Cannon
Babysafe, latex, newborn-flow, which is made in UK) that is the best
in their experience, but I usually make this more generic by saying
the the important features to look for are long length, so that it
reaches the junction of the hard and soft palate, and very slow flow.
I explain that these features are important because you want the baby
to be used to something touching at the back of the mouth (like where
the breast reaches), and that if the flow is too fast, then baby may
learn the technique of using the tongue to control the flow and not
keep it in the correct position for breastfeeding.
Also, another feature that may help in some cases is a wide-based
teat that makes the baby flange his lips around it. If they are using
Nuk teats, I recommend that they encourage the baby to close the lips
over the wide part near the bottle neck, rather than the narrow bit
between the bulge on the end and the that wide portion. One mum I
spoke to was worried that the baby was trying to 'swallow' too much
of the teat and she kept pulling the bottle back out again to get
baby's lips on the narrow bit. After I explained that the baby was
using a more 'breastfeeding' type action, she quit fighting with him.
