Tricia asks what else she can do to encourage a teenage, smoking,
no-BFing-supporters woman to breastfeed her baby.
Tricia, sounds like you've done a pretty good job so far - at least she is
going to give it a go. What does the father of the baby think? I think the
research shows that (if he's around) he's probably more of an influence
than grandmother/neighbour.
The other thing which you might find useful is to introduce her to other
teenage mothers, preferably breastfeeding ones. Our hospital has a 'Young
Parents' group for teenagers. It starts during pregnancy and does their
antenatal education, provides support and of course they all come back to
show their babies. While not officially organised they have then set up a
'play group' amongst themselves. Sounds like your young lady could do with
other mothers telling her that breastfeeding really is a lot easier too -
this list-serv may not sound like it is, but that's only because it's
problems we deal with. :-)
Research just recently published (sorry, don't have it with me, but I'm
pretty sure if you did a search on Medline you'd find it - it was within
the last two weeks) demonstrated that pregnant women who went on a
particular 'stop smoking' program were very much more successful in
stopping then the ones who just received the usual information. This may
also assist her to breastfeed for longer once she's started.
Good luck
Denise
