In catching up on a few old lactnets, I found this, most likely out of its
original context:

It occurs to me that there's another way to determine what's "normal" for
certain ages.  It's to look at how often babies nurse at that age *and then
note when weaning takes place*.  I suspect that the baby who nurses 5 times
a day at 4-6 months is out the door by a year.  We need to know not how
often *most* 5 month olds nurse, but how often those 5 month olds who are
happily nursing at age 2 or 3 nursed when they were 5 months old.  To
recommend something different from what *those* children did is most likely
to put a professional seal on a pattern connected with early weaning.
