Subject: won't suck

I am posing this question for a colleague who works in the public health dept and was given this referral. Baby boy born at 41 wks. gest. with meconium. Got suctioned but did go to the regular nursery after delivery. He was there for maybe 12 hours and got transferred to the NICU because he would not suck. Not on breast, finger, bottle nipple, nothing. All other reflexes are intact. He was discharged at 21/2 wks. old with an NG tube. He is now 3 wks old with no improvement. The Public health LC tried finger feeding but as soon as the flow started he got extremely anxious and couldn't handle it. No suck swallow coordination. Mom did see a craniosacral therapist once last week and does have a referral to be evaluated by a speech therapist. Suggested to skin to skin, maybe try to stimulate finger sucking while NG feeding . I'm worried about this baby . The suctioning after delivery because of meconium could make this baby averse to any oral stimulation but three weeks out? I've haven't experienced that before. Mom had an epidural but not for very long before the baby was born. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
