This inquiry came in to me, and I would like to have some input on this please:
...... " I have a 6 month old daughter who is solely breastfed. I have been
working and breastfeeding successfully for 3 months now. I am a restaurant
manager so pumping at work is a challenge for me. I usually have my husband
bring the baby in to me at work after he picks her up at daycare for me to
nurse. I simply cannot pump enough to keep up with her and the extra
nursing session means one less bottle that we need. Recently, a customer
called the 800 number hotline and complained about me breastfeeding my baby
in the dining room. My boss, a woman who also breastfed her daughter, sent
me a voice mail message stating that I am not allowed to bring my daughter
to work to nurse. I am however, allowed the
time to pump. I would not mind taking my baby to the back room to nurse. I
don't understand the difference between using work time to pump vs. using
that time to nurse my baby. I work for a world-wide, family restaurant
chain. The locations in this area are owned by a fairly new franchise. I
called the HR department and I am obviously the first mom to work and
continue to breastfeed. The HR rep doesn't see a problem with me going to
the back room to nurse my baby. My boss's position is that if I'm allowed to
nurse my baby while working, so is everyone else. Of course, I see no
problem with this! I may be able to get some support from the owner if I am
careful about my approach. I don't know him very well and I have no idea how
he feels about breastfeeding. Do you have any imformative pamphlets that I
could use? Any suggestions of how to get what I want? I will be meeting
with my boss sometime after the 15th to discuss this issue. Thank you!"
Please respond with ideas to the list and to me privately. Thank you. Kathleen
