We have a 40 bed, level 3 unit (with 48 babies currently in residence) Of
the 48 babies, 44 have mothers who are pumping to provide milk now or in
future, or are actually breastfeeding. Of the four who are not, two are
twins. Over the past year, our breastfeeding rate in NICU runs between 92
and 98%.
We make follow-up calls at one week, one month, three months and six months
after discharge. The rate of breastfeeding three months after discharge
from our unit is 80% (defined as receiving all breast milk one way or
another. Most are feeding directly at breast but may be using an SNS for
some feedings to give fortified breast milk, or are still needing a shield).
Since I am not in the office I don't have the 6 month figure right in front
of me and can't remember for sure. If anybody is interested, I'll look it
up.
Glad to have a little more time to actually READ CAREFULLY the posts. The
discussions recently have been excellent. Thanks to everyone for your
insights and information.
Deanne, R.N. IBCLC
