I understand what you are saying, Vicki, about breastfeeding speaking
for itself. Surely, it will always be that way. However, there's got
to be more in the mainstream media and from doctors in the office--the
powers that be, I guess--about the disadvantages and hazards of ABM. It
can only happen if we speak up, but we each take the step when we feel
our footing is certain--when we feel comfortable, knowledgeable, and
confident about speaking firmly.
Marcia's point is very well taken, and while she is preaching to the
choir, (and to carry the nice analogy gaggingly further--sorry, but I
can't resist) each member is on a uniquely different note. I was not
aware, for example, of the GM foods debate that Heather wrote about, or
even that genetically modified ingredients are going into ABM. There's
a lot to be aware of.
I agree with Vicki that all the different ways of promoting
breastfeeding have their place. Even what's appropriate in a LLL
meeting is different than what can reasonably be taught at a pre-natal
class. Within the "introductory" curriculum in a pre-natal class, there
would conceivably be something on the advantages of breastfeeding and
the differences between bottlefeeding and breastfeeding. This would
probably touch on the disadvantages of bottlefeeding and even the
hazards of feeding ABM. It doesn't seem negative--only informative.
I see so much more about breastfeeding in the media and in the medical
profession, than I did when I first happened upon the breastfeeding
scene in 1986. Maybe it shows my optimism, but I really don't see much
negative stuff. We are having an effect, people are paying attention,
and those who speak gently, as well as those who speak firmly and
eloquently, are being listened to. Let's support one another in the
different, always focused, ways we speak. Vive la many faces of
breastfeeding promotion and support!
