Did anyone catch the Good Morning America segment on the child with severe
allergies. The doctors on the program followed up with a discussion on the
rising number of children with both allergies and asthma. Below is my comment
to them:
"Listening to the report and talk with Dr. Johnson & Dr. Nancy Snyderman, he
commented that "we don't know why" all of these children are experiencing so
many more allergies, asthma, etc than in the past.
As a Board Certified Lactation Consultant, I have often found myself
wondering the same question. I believe that part of the problem is that since
the 1950's, we as a society have gone away from breastfeeding, which is
nature's way of providing babies with optimal nutrition, while providing
immunity and allowing them to become exposed to outside allergens at a much
later time. When babies are fed artificial substances (i.e. infant formula),
they are usually exposed to cow's milk or soy at a very early age. Cow's milk
and soy are among the top 10 common allergens to humans!! I would like to see
this topic addressed by GMA.
Thank you. I am a faithful watcher of your program for many years. "
Anyone else with comments, ideas on this topic???
