Hi Lisa,
This reminds me of a mom that I saw many years ago who did well for 6
weeks, bf exclusively, did not schedule feeds, and had plummeting milk
supply/infant weight gain immediately thereafter for 3 children. I saw
her for her third, and nothing that we did helped much. I wonder if I
was too inexperienced to pick up a family oral anomaly, or if there was
something hormonal going on with mom that she was not able to maintain
lactation once her prolactin level dropped. I don't think info on
metoclopramide was widely known yet at the time I saw her. Sounds very
similar to your case.
I also once saw the opposite, a mom who was entirely unable to
downregulate her milk supply until she weaned totally. She suffered
engorgement and mastitis repeatedly, but managed to hang in and nurse
almost a year. Had the same experience with both babies.
How much we don't know!
