Greetings, Fellow Lactnetters !
I am searching for [ Hospital-based ] Guidelines for Pumping with an
Electric Hospital Grade pump when the newborn is unable to nurse and the
mother must establish and maintain a milk supply indefinitely in the
Neonatal ICU setting. One of our breastfeeding resource nurses has
suggested that when double pumping, the mother should stop after every 5
min. of pumping to massage the breasts briefly and then resume
pumping---this means a pause for 3-4 times during each pumping session that
should be 15-20 min. duration 8 to 10 times per day. I cannot find a
reference to support this technique. All literature I have read advises to
massage/palpate for "lumps" before pumping. Does anyone out there have a
pumping guideline / plan for Neonatal ICU's that they could share ???
Thank you in advance ! You can e-mail me privately and to Lactnet.
Sincerely,
Barbara Montague, RN IBCLC
