Apologies if this has been posted - I've been a little intermittent lately.
The jan 2000 issue of American Academy of Pediatrics Grand Rounds, whose
stated mission is to provide pediatricians with synopses and critiques of
new studies, reviewed an article by Nakamura et al from Archives of
Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (1999 153:1019-1023) titled 'Review of
azards associated with childdren place in adult beds." The article is a
review of the data collected for the Consumer Product Safety Commission
articlethat has been so universally reviled.
Commentary by Peter Scheidt, MD FAAP included this comment;
"The conclusion of this study should have been to advise caution by parents,
rather than to alarm, and to call for a study to identify and quantify the
risk as quickly as possible."
The Grand Rounds editors' note states, "This report demonstrates the
importance of study design and of a critical approach to the literature.
This was an extemely weak study with biased samplings and lack of control
groups. No one should draw ANY conclusions from this except to say that it
indicates a rigourously controlled study should be done."
He also alludes to a good study published later that I have not yet read -
British Medical Journal 1999; 319:1457-1462 by PS Blair et al.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen these guys at any press conferences yet.
