Well, yesterday I made contact with Dr. Carol Marcus, a well published
Pediatric Pulmonologist at Hopkins, and scheduled an appointment in two weeks
with her....we will discuss our common interests in peds as well as our
cross-references regarding airway, respiration, development, deformation,
etc....SO...PLEASE POST your questions about habits, thumbs, fingers,
pacifiers, "survival" that have NOT been covered so far, ON LACTNET...and we
will discuss/ cover them if possible.
Re: ADULT SNORING.....too many adults have samll upper airways leading to
snoring than ever did or do suck their thumb.
Re: SIDS....SIDS occurs more OFTEN with infants with shorter mandibles,
smaller airways.
Re: FAMILIAR PATTERNS.....remember we inherit a good bit of our anatomy and
physiology from our mamas + paps.
Re: SUCKING.....Freud's fixation argument OR 1-2 year impulse argument...OR
survival argument....OR habit argument....it occurs.
Re: SUCKING OUTCOMES & HYPOXIA....it is most important to know that IF early
sucking is a respiratory survival technique, it GENERALLY works against
survival as time goes on as it creates a smaller airway which can be measured
after year 2 or 3...thus it is then important to determine time of need to
cut-off...i.e. to remove the "blankie" or other known factors which increases
dramatically the chance to stop the SUCKING & AIRWAY CONSTRICTION.
Re: SUCK & CHEW...my understanding is that pregnant women were found to be
anemic, low iron, often by their increased "CHEWING" of ICE......SO....maybe
increased SUCKING which uses many of the same oral muscles IS a secondary
response to SURVIVAL...but a primary response to upper airway blockage caused
HYPOXIA????????
Sincerely,
David C. Page, DDS
