Herpetic whitlow refers to a single vesicular (fluid-filled) lesion or group
of such lesions on the distal parts of fingers. It is caused by Herpes
Simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) which also causes "cold sores". The virus is
quite contagious, and can be spread directly from "skin-to-skin",
particularly among wrestlers. (There is even a special name for that: herpes
gladiatorium!) So, I would say it is a good idea to cover mom's lesions
when baby is nursing, and ask a dermatologist if Acyclovir or one of the
newer antiviral medications might help clear mom's lesions faster.
