My advice to the mother would be to find another childcare facility FAST.
If this facility is unwilling to follow the mother's instructions for
feeding the baby, I hate to imagine what else they are doing that she may
not like. If my experience is any guide, this may only be the first of many
"battles" that this mother will be required to wage in order to ensure that
her child receives the quality of care he/she deserves. It sounds like the
baby has not been in this facility very long; thus there are no
"attachments" to break if a new provider is found.
The mother may find, as I did, that a licensed, private provider who cares
for children in her home is much more likely to work with the mother and be
willing to make adjustments for situations like breastfeeding mothers,
mothers who use cloth diapers, etc.
Really, if you took your dog to be boarded and asked the caretakers to feed
special, very expensive food designed just for your dog, wouldn't you be
upset if they gave your dog generic dried dog food while you were away?
Would you ever take your dog back to that kennel? I think not. This mother
needs to find a childcare provider that she can talk with, not one that she
is afraid she will alienate. I know it is hard to find reliable childcare,
but it is something she must do. Encourage her to be strong and stand up
for her child.
