If a mother is pumping and bottle-feeding her breastmilk (that is, her breast
is never or seldom being "drained" by the baby) and continues to do what her
body has gotten used to doing during a mastitis, it does make sense that she
would not be more likely to have an abcess due to continuing this pumping
routine. However, a mother who has never in her life used a pump, or has
only seldom used a pump, but is asked to use one during the course of a
mastitis, may have trouble obtaining much milk at all, never mind "draining"
the breast, which could lead to abcess.
This is my take on it!
