example: this week at a support group mom comes in with a five week old baby
who is alternately crying and vigorously rooting with mouth wide open. mom is
not making any moves toward feeding the baby. i say "hi, we'll get started in
a minute, you can go ahead and feed your baby". she looks up at me with a
look that indicates mild surprise and very innocently say "oh, do you think
that is what he wants? i just fed him an hour ago."
mom had been feeding with a shield, "about every three hours", supplementing
with EM via dental syringe @ shield, feedings taking about an hour each, seen
bf supportive doc x2 and a private practice lc once a couple of weeks ago,
mom mentioned that dads advice was to put baby down and let him cry, baby
weight was just a few ozs above birth weight. yiks!
