i agree with teresa about her observations. i want to add that one
spectacularly awful case i had involved similar things, as well as trying to
adhere to a well-known religious parenting program. but another factor that
was important was that at four months, the mother felt that the baby was "old
enough" to go longer between feedings, so limited feedings even more (just
her own belief, in addition to the ezzo thing). so she began to believe that
the baby cried so much because he was "tired" and not due to hunger. he
gained not one ounce between four and six months, which is when he got
referred. so as babies get older, beliefs about age-appropriate behavior may
well be part of the picture.
