I am certain everyone on Lactnet will be angry as I was with this story.
I visited a mom (nurse) and helped her to get a good start with nursing
she had been doing well ( at least each time I called she had said so).
One evening she had called to say she was very ill, weak, diarreah,
vomiting ect and what could I do for her?? I had asked when was the last
time she had fed her baby she said I have not been able, and 4 feedings
had gone by ( yes she was feeling full) I encouraged her to pump , she
had no pump and therefore manually expressed. Her baby had already
received a bottle of Formula and was not interested in being her pump at
this time.
I asked her if her breasts had been a problem enquiring about Mastitis
she said no her breasts were fine I did mention to keep a good look out
for hot hard lumps because she was a good candidate for Mastitis.
I called a week later to see how she was. She said that a mastitis had
developped and her Dr. gave her antibiotics, told her to bind herself
with ice and that was it. Now this is a nurse who was well informed
about breastfeeding etc. Her response? Well he was my Doctor!
Is it gotton so bad that Doctor's can cause this kind of torture and the
patients still see them as God's. Needless to say I was very angry!!!!If
this mom wanted to wean --her choice of course could he not have given
her a less painful approach?
Dr. Jack care to comment ?
Yours truly
Dianne
