Hi, I am a new member. Although I have happily perused postings over the
last couple of years I haven't had the oppurtunity to join until now. I am a
happily self employed LC in the Boston area who is finding the the huge grey
area- lack of knowledge when it comes to breast milk allergies/
sensitivities frustrating with a current case. The Mom involved is a primip,
had twins at 36 wks, who are now approx. 2mths. and has consulted with me
several times since the babies were 2 wks of age. The initial consult being
for sore nipples, thrush in mouth, diaper areas , irritable "colicky" type
babies. After treating the thrush (diflucan-Mom, nystatin and gentian
violet-babes) and correcting a shallow latch and poor suck with compression,
off center latch -much improved but.... just when you think all is fixed the
babies have persisted with waxing and waning thrush, mom is s/s free and
although better fdrs. ie. improved technique they would suck for comfort all
day probably because they are obviously uncomfortable! They have received
formula since birth, as little as possible per mom, now on an "elemental"
type d/t colic s/s but Mom has always felt, much to her dismay tthat they
are more content on the formula. This was reinforced last wk when she was
forced to travel overseas for four days and they were fed mostly abm with
some ebm mixed in and were changed babies, per their mgm, much more con†ent
with better weight gain etc. Why are they happier with the formula? we have
always questioned Mom's dietary inluences and she was dairy free for 3 wks
but noticed little change, she has since started on min. dairy eats mainly
ch./rice but is losing weight and is concerned about adopting a perjorative
diet w/o a more definative pix, as am I. She has also read that yeast can
cause abdominal d/c in babies and wonders about this- I have not found that
to be the case and am wondering if any of you have?! She is a dynamite,
super motivated mom!! Her milk supply has always been adequate as far as I
have seen, the formula used mainly because of their always hungry appearance
and her resulting confusion, she is now using a scale to monitor their
weight gain which is borderline ok. i think it would be fine if they were
happier and burned less calories. Please respond asap! Your friend in the
sn
