There's a story in the Talmud about Rabbi Joshua, who was famously scholarly
but also famously poor and ugly. When an equally scholarly but rich and
handsome person scorned him, he said, "Complain to the one who created me!"

That can be a good way to think about the givenness of babies. A child may
indeed have to defer, in the longer run, to her parent. But the parent must
defer to the one who created the child; and if the Master of the Universe
decrees that your child digests her food in two hours, it is unseemly of you
to put your own will to wait four hours above that divine arrangement.
