If the gastrointestinal tract is overrun with yeast then lactobacilli help
bring back balance. The rectum and the vagina are in such close physical
proximity that an imbalance in one may spread to the other without a plasma
conduit.

In my travels to medline earlier tonight I found a new article abstracted:
Not new information perhaps, rather a validation... Here is enough to use
as a pointer to locate the article.

TITLE: Clinical evaluation of the addition of lyophilized, heat-killed
Lactobacillus acidophilus LB to oral rehydration therapy in the treatment of
acute diarrhea in children.
AUTHORS:        Simakachorn N; Pichaipat V; Rithipornpaisarn P; Kongkaew C;
Tongpradit P; Varavithya W [PARA][PARA]Children aged 3 to 24 months with
acute diarrhea and mild or moderate dehydration were enrolled in the study.

CONCLUSIONS: Addition of L. acidophilus LB to oral rehydration therapy was
effective in the treatment of children with acute diarrhea by decreasing the
duration of diarrhea.

Maybe this would help Heather's little patient too. Carla
