I was under the impression that calves had to have a first feeding of
colostrum from their mom.  Usually given in a bucket with artificial teat.
Calves are separated from their moms at   birth on most modern dairy
farms, but calf won't survive without that first feed.  The rest of their
feeds are a skim milk sort of - artificially concocted calf formula.
