To the best of my knowledge, the CBC done would not indicate blood alcohol
content, and my guess is she told someone she had 2 glasses of wine the day
before, and they decided this was a "usual" intake, or the typical
underestimate given by a person who has a problem with alcohol. While I
tend to take the mother's word for truth in almost all instances, we do
have to keep in mind that alcoholics, just like smokers, do not want to
admit all the drinks they do take, and the HP may have been making an
assumption rather than really knowing something. Or maybe the person has
a history of ETOH abuse that you are not aware of, but the OB office is.
Anyway, it won't show up in a blood test. Actually red wine will boost
iron levels! But while BF or preg. it's better to drink your grape juice
without fermentation. Michelle Scott, RD,MA,IBCLC in iced NH

Subject: Alcohol and Iron

I couldn't find this in the archives, but may have done the wrong search.
A WIC client came in and said she'd had an iron test done at her 6 week
check up by OB clinic. She is nursing and admitted to having had two
glasses of wine the day before the test as it was Christmas.

When the clinic got the iron test back they told her to cut back on her
alcohol intake. She's upset since this was her only alcohol intake
since getting pregnant last year. Our WIC Nutritionist asked me
to post this question:

Does Alcohol bind itself to iron?

Answers and References would be appreciated.
