The first time I was called for Jury Duty, was the day I came home from the
hospital with my third child. I spoke to the clerk on the phone and had no
problem, I was excused. I was very direct with the clerk and told him I
would be happy to serve but I would be bringing the baby to the court with me
as i was breastfeeding. I think he was too embarassed to call me back so he
excused me. I just this past week received a summons for Federal Court Jury
duty. It was for an 8 week long trial. a Suit against a big tobacco company
brought by the estate of someone who died of cancer. Very long questionaire
had to be filled out on the first day. The last question was: What if any
hardships do you have that would make it difficult to serve? I simply listed
the names and ages ( not that I often view them as hardships) Erin 10,
Shannon 7, Ryan 5, Madeline 1. Again I have been excused. My back up plan
was to show up for the next phase which involved questions from the
Attorneys, and act like I already knew everything about these types of cases.
You know, I read the paper every day, watch CNN, CNBC constantly, total news
junkie. Listen to Rush Limbaugh Every day etc.... I wish this mother luck.
If it were me, they could just hold me in contempt, the day in jail might be
a nice diversion!
