Just attended a small workshop saying that short intervals, 15 minutes, more frequently actually resulted in better emptying of the breast than less frequent, longer sessions, over a 24 hour period.

Subject: NICU pumping??????

Wise Ones:

Please help me on this one! I am trying to find the best recommendations for NICU moms and pumping. There are 2 totally different schools of thought and I am unable to find any information in the JHL.

My question is:
Which method is better?
Pump until the breast is "empty" or to pump in more frequent intervals for shorter (15 minute) periods?

Prior to Lactogenesis II, I suggest 15 minutes of pumping (with a hospital grade pump) 8 or more times in 24 hours as well as massage prior to and during feeds.

I have watched Dr. Morton's video and love her technique, but other resources say different things.

Thanks in advance!

Julia Augur IBCLC, RLC
