Babies are not exposed to the epidural medications in the same way after
birth as they are before birth.  Leaving the epidural in after surgery will
result in a more comfortable and alert mother who will be able to move more
easily and initiate breastfeeding more actively.  She will not be as likely
to postpone breastfeedings due to pain or sleepiness.  So, the baby will
breastfeed more often, the mom will not be sleepy from the effects of pain
medication, the milk will "come in" sooner, and breastfeeding will get off
to a better start.
