Thanks, Debbie!  This was just the connection I needed to see.
Where bathing or care of babies interferes with mother-child interaction (and
thereby breastfeeding) it is a problem.  In my unit it is more important to
get the baby washed, weighed and dressed than to let it find the breast itself
in the first couple of hours.  That is a problem.
Thanks also to the person (I can't remember your name and I am reading my mail
on line so can't check til after I send this) who reminded us that we can use
expressed breastmilk as a disinfectant on a smelly cord.  It works for pretty
much everything else, so why not this too?
I'm on the third day of an intensive two week course in epidemiology in
Gothenburg, Sweden.  The instructor has already been informed that it WILL be
relevant to breastfeeding.  :-)
