A weekly family oriented newspaper here in Brooklyn has a column called
"Nutrition for better health", and quotes Lucas' study as follows:
"what a premature infant eats in the first month of life can have lasting
intellectual impact. Alan Lucas and his colleagues at the Medical
Research Council (MRC) in London report IQ scores for two groups of
formula fed children; one, the average, the other especially formulated
by MRC. They were tested when they were about eight years old. While
girls from the two groups performed about equally, boys from the preemie
formula group (MRC formula) scored an average of 12 points highter on
verbal tests than boys who received standard formula. According to
animal data, males exhibit heightened vulnerability to effects of
neonatal malnutrition on learning and behavior."
Does anyone know what this is all about? Has anyone heard of "MRC"
formula???
thanks for your help.
