I have found hand pumps useful in the hospital. I am a hospital based LC and
will give a mother of a baby who has not been effectively breastfeeding a hand
pump with instructions to feed baby what she can pump in the 36 hour to 72
hour postpartum range, when I feel that she will be able to pump something.
I find that it will help hydrate and feed the infant until home health nurse
can visit or a return visit to the clinic can be made the next day or in two
days.
I find it far less complicated than a procuring a rental pump.
Of course the pump has to be a user friendly, easy, effective pump...not a
cheap, flimsy piece of plastic.
