Pam,

I can understand your frustration too. Recently, I've had inquiries (and 1
client last week) about using my doula services for women who are going to
have planned c/s for threatened big babies. Big sigh. Once that seed is
planted, it is hard to uproot it, especially if their friends and family
support it frequently.

I don't think that -all- HCPs are telling moms to have c/s because of
wanting regular working hours. I think some of them are telling mothers to
have c/s because a c/s is always defensible in court, even if the outcome
was a smaller/earlier baby than predicted. It seems illogical to me that
HMOs/insurers are more willing to cover expensive c/s births than cheaper
vaginal ones, or even cheaper midwife-attended births. There should be wide
public outcry about this IMO, because it affects anyone who pays health
insurance premiums.

We are very blessed to have such a skilled, knowledgeable and dedicated
physician like Dr. Montgomery working with new mothers in our state.

On the bright side though, my clients who have had c/s births have usually
ended up nursing for quite a while because it's something they CAN control
and feel good about. They know that I will send them to LCs for more
in-depth help and LLL for mothering support. They trust me more on the
nursing info, resources and referrals because they've read and heard that
the info that I'm giving them is more true than their HCPs. So I pick my
battles and know that I can do some positive reinforcing, reassurance of
their instinctual mothering skills, and good work with moms after their
births to help them have some sense of success from their mothering/birthing
experiences.

I just wish that we could bridge that gap between birth information and
breastfeeding information because the two are twin sisters. Too bad there
is no respectable and reliable leader in the field of "mothering through
birthing" support like there is in LLL for "mothering through breastfeeding.
