Rose Marie,
Ouch! I think we can all relate to your sad experience with moms quitting bf.
The one thing I can say to reassure you is that if you are kind and
supportive of these moms, they will remember the good information they got
from you and it might affect their nursing relationship with their next baby
or what they tell their friends about breastfeeding. I have had moms who quit
refer their friends at an earlier stage in the process, when breastfeeding is
easier to salvage. Other moms have quit but then resumed breastfeeding in a
few days or weeks, when the pressure was off. Some went on to sucessfully
breastfeed a subsequent child.
Kathy Auerback wrote an editorial some years ago (in JHL) about LC's
being the court of last resort, and much of the time wind up helping women
wean that we could have helped breastfeed if they came to us before their
resources were so depleted. I think we all are frustrated by these
situations. This is where our profession needs to concentrate promotion
efforts -letting women know what LC's do and how to find us, so they are more
likely to come for help.
