Hi everybody,
My name in Fine Fischer, studiyng for family doctor in the Netherlands. My
study takes only 8 more weeks, but just before I delivered my second son, 21
november 2004. With him we have worries all the time, and a lot of questions
and experiences to share with you all about breastfeeding.
I'll try to make it short. I'm also still BF my 3-year old, twice a day, and
because of my personal interest and work I found out a lot about BF.
With the problems of my second son, now 9 months old, I asked help of
different lactation experts in Netherlands, they tried really hard, but we
couldn't figure why eveything was so difficult.

Started to suck well in the first week, passed meconium, after week severe
vomiting twice, but drank again. In the weeks following: sucking was bad,
eveytime went off, crying all day, drop fed him every hour(by breast),
passing green stools, diarrhoea. Almost never vomited or gave back feeding.
Couldn't get a rythm. Weight: went down from P60 to P16. Doctors only found
liverfunction disorders, unknown. My feeling was bad. Looked for a
gastro-enterologist, made a barium meal foto: duodenum with curves that
shouldn't be there, but according to the doctor: no malrotation, go home,
get a rythm, don't be concerned........ Did a diet(allergy) for 3 mths, no
effect....
Son did not want to eat solid foods, tried, but couln't. Development normal,
motoric bit fast development. Stools stayed very thin, with mucous and
threats, now and then a very rotten piece in there. Very wet diapers(urine).
Not able to sit from pain and discomfort, always on the move. Only drinking
while half asleep, very on the top of the nipple. Awake 8 times a night.
Found a dutch mother (no BF), daughter same problem: was malrotation. Found
surgeon, he sure thought something was wrong: did laparoscopy: malrotation:
so operated it directly by laparotomy.
On the infusion with glucose I saw my real son: really relaxed, playing....
From the moment the bowels worked again, went worse..., not as worse as
before, less pain(the appendix was in the right upper quadrant, attached to
kidney/ liver, duodenum was all curvy in upper abdomen, he tried to give it
more space). Now, 5 weeks after the operation, he's drinking good amounts
but still in a strange way, not able to swallow or tolerate solid food,
irritated when falling etc. Diarrhoea several times a day, never BF stools..
I'm curious of your experiences, especially to the ones of:
- Jennifer James; in the archives i found the story from Andrea Floyd and
her son Matthew, the problem look alike, is he eating now and how did the BF
go during the years?(mail:12 sept 2002)
- Diane diCarlo:The story from Carter and his stools after malrotation
operation, did he go on on BF? How is he now?(mail:28 jan 2002)
I'm going on, trying to feed my child as best as I can, but doctors don't
know much about the BF, and this is a very complicated problem, but maybe
your experience can help me further. One last idea is that the maturation of
the bowel comes later because the bowel and his nerves were not developed
right. So we have to go on a few more years and hope that, aside the BF,
he'll learn to tolerate food...
thanks, Fine Fischer
