We recently had a baby diagnosed with truncus....sent to major pediatric
center away from Mom....only recourse we had was to get her to pump and freeze
milk, which spouse or family member would take to hospital about 5 miles away.
She is still pumping, we encouraged her to stay intouch with a Lactation
Consultant post discharge to help maintain her supply and to help get baby on
breast as soon as possible. One of our nursery nurses, roommates is one of
pedi nurses at the hospital tending baby and has told us baby is stable and Mom
is still pumping.
Unfortunately she could not deliver where the baby would end up, that would
be my first choice. Next get her involved with a LC to get a pump and set up
ahead of time and to see if she could speak with Pedi Cardiologist ahead of
time to help formulate a plan.
Plan may not be set in stone dependent on how baby transitions and does post
delivery.
But it can help to elevate her role in the team management of her
child...though Mom is one of the most important members of the "team" regardless. It
just lets them know she wants to provide the best food to help her child in
its recovery.
