Hi Shaughn
You may have caught the sharp end of my ire - although it was not aimed at
you. I apologise. I am a bit frustrated with constant assertions on the
list that all manner of gadgets (including but not limited to pumps and
scales) are a necessary condition of successful breastfeeding. I was
trying, perhaps not particularly successfully to point out the
gadget-addicts amongst us that which many of us outside the USA (and a few
inside) have known all along (and not needed an over-priced American
university to tell us): that breastfeeding is a robust process; that gadgets
are usually unnecessary and can be counterproductive.
I hope you will forgive my sharp tongue.
Regards
Nina

Milk Supply

Nina I think I made light of a topic you obviously feel strongly about so to
help me 'hear' you - which is extremely difficult by email I find :-) -
could I clarify a couple of thoughts:

Is it your experience that all women find hand expressing quicker and more
effective?
Are you suggesting we don't utilize breast pumps?
Or are you saying that we need to be less focussed on breast pumps and more
focussed on teaching mothers how to hand express?

Shaughn Leach said,
"I am glad I have my automatic washing machine so I don't have to wash 'all'
my clothes by hand!!"

I certainly would not want to wash all my clothes by hand, either but not
because I have an aversion to hand washing (or a preference for the use of
machines) per se. I use the machine because doing so occupies less of my
time and washes more effectively. If it were not so, I would not have wasted
my money buying a washing machine. If washing in the machine took more of my
time and was less efficient than hand washing, you'd better believe I'd hand
wash everything!

The point here is that hand expressing is quicker and more effective than
using a breast pump or using a breast pump alone.
Cheers
