There are still a few cultures that wet-nurse. Some of my clients
formerly from Iran are surprised to find out that lactation consultants
teach, not wet-nurse. They were all nursed till at least age 2.
According to my clients, it was common for family members, friends and
neighbors to wet-nurse each other's babies when a mom needed to go out.
From time to time I get calls asking me if I can locate a wet-nurse
or if I wet-nurse myself. I've never gotten a lewd call although once
someone did leave a message on my machine asking if I do a consult for
puppies. I suspect it was my daughter's school friends.
