One that I use with prenatal breastfeeding class I borrowed from a
breastfeeding book, one of the authors may be Renfrew. The cartoon in the
book shows that bf is like learning to drive a car (most everyone in this
area drives). I explain that when you first learn to drive you concentrate on
each step: adjust the seat, the rear view mirror, put car in gear, turn the
key, step on the gas, step on brake, change gears, etc. Now when you drive,
you don't think about each step, it's automatic, it's easy to drive. When you
first breastfeed you concentrate on each step: postition yourself, position
baby, support breast, tickle baby's mouth, wait for open mouth, pull baby
quickly onto breast, etc. Once you & baby have learned to do it, it's
automatic, it's easy to breastfeed.
