Sorry I am a little behind in posting this with the discussion, but here it
is. I received a discharge pack (minus the ABM) at our local hospital when my
daughter was born 4 yrs ago. A few months later, I crafted a letter & asked
the hospital IBCLC (a friend) for the specific administrator to send it to. I
took the letter, the bag & all it's contents, packed it up & sent it to her.
The letter's "attitude" was 'I was a recent consumer at the hospital, and you
seem to want to be BF friendly by having an IBCLC on staff, offer BF classes,
and by offering elec pumps to employees. I am a bit confused by you
endorsment of these infant formula manufacturers, and your true position on
promoting BF?' ....you get the drift? Play dumb! Let them know they are
sending the wrong message to consumers! (I was not an IBCLC at the time).
A copy of the letter went to the OB Nursing Supervisor and the Chief of
Peds. The hosp administrator wrote me back saying it was not the hospital's
doing, on handing out the discharge packs, but all the Peds had it on their
standing orders! Actually, before I got the hospital's letter, my Ped (who
was chief of peds at the time) called me at home & said they had reviewed my
letter at their section meeting & they unanimously decided to do away with ALL
discharge gift packs--even to the formula feeding moms! My chin must've hit
the floor!!!!
I might suggest to hospital LC's that maybe they could get some "consumers"
to write letters--like moms you might know that are pro-BF, someone from LLL,
etc--but someone that has delivered (preferably recently) at the hospital.
Letters to the editor of a local paper might not hurt either!
NEVER underestimate the power of even ONE little ol' letter!!!
