At my hospital, we have an arrangement with a durable medical equipment
(DME) company. They supply us with clean pumps, sterile kits and the
paperwork for rental plus the paperwork to submit for insurance
payment. We (the LCs, RNs, & techs on the maternal child unit) rent
pumps to moms who need them prior to discharge. We do the teaching and
assure continuity of the established pumping pattern as our inpatients
use the same brand pump while in the hospital. The parents return the
rental pumps to the DME company at their location (not to the hospital)
and they clean them, and send them back to us again. There is no
minimal rental time so moms feel free to rent the pump for what ever
purpose. The DME company does all the billing and collection of moneys
and dirty pumps. They hold the lease with the pump company and order
the kits. They pay the pump company bills and do their paperwork. They
deal with the taxes. They also get all the profits. We get to teach the
moms and have the equipment on hand when needed while avoiding all
contact with the money end of things.
