Marie,
I have Jan Langman's "Medical Embryology" published by Williams and
Wilkins.  Gives a good overview of the development of each system and the
 major malformations.  WOuldn't recommend this one for those with no
medical background, though.  FOr others "Before We Are Born" by Keith L.
Moore published by William B. Saunders would probably be better.  Still a
high reading level, but less jargon.
