OK, I have another post for all of the wise ones. I have a friend at work
whose 18 year old daughter had a baby six months ago. She's not married and
initially the father and his family, especially his mother questioned
paternity. They were somewhat supportive when the baby was born but have been
difficult since then. There are now visitation issues with the father and his
family.
Anyway, I have been amazed with this girl's persistance to breastfeed. The
baby was 37 weeks, mom had PIH and baby was in intensive care for a week to
get sugars stabilized (another issue altogether). Chrissy persisted in her
right to breastfeed despite negative comments and the lack of support in ICN.
I worked with her quite a bit while he was there. She continued to nurse and
pump after she went back to high school and was able to graduate and
continues to nurse and pump.
The question my friend wanted to know was if anyone knows any way to force
the father's family to comply with her wishes that the baby get breastmilk
while visiting them. This family wants to take him for long weekends, has the
fathers old furniture etc from when he was a baby and states that they "found
this great new formula that is just like breastmilk" Lipil of course. There
are other safety issues as well.
The judge says that six months is long enough to breastfeed and that
there shouldn't be a problem, even said that " a $10 pump is good enough".
Don't know what that was about since I know she has a pump already but
ggggrrrrr anyway. Are there any resources out there on legalities? We live in
Delaware County, PA. I did tell her to get a copy of the AAP statement and to
see what resource LLL has. Any other ideas, names of lawyers that could act
on the baby's behalf, any help at all?
Thanks so much in advance, Sherry Weersing RNC
