One thing I have learned lately when working with moms is to find out what
they are thinking. One educated mom thought she didn't have enough milk for
her baby because her breasts weren't rock hard and sore like all her friends
said they would be. I've had another mom who honestly was oblivious to the
fact that her baby was starving to death. Only a year later when she looked
back at the pictures did she realize what had happened. She had thought her
baby cried because he was spoiled or jealous of the other children or just
because he wanted attention(not need related). Another mom was so worried
about her rest and ms reoccurring that she allowed her baby to keep sleeping
thinking the child was being a good baby and she almost starved to death.

What I am getting at is that we can have all the technical info down and
present it to the mom but what we may need to do is get to the root of what is
going on inside mom's mind. Newborn extremely jaundice, not gaining, mom
putting all energy into work. Fear? Distancing self from bf failure by having
success at work? Distancing self from ill baby to avoid guilt?
Relying on old wives tales? Any number of things can be going on here.

Try to feel mom out and see what the underlying problem is with her.

Hope that helps.
